Committee on the Selection and Use of Essential Medicines
Guide to the submissions for antiretroviral drugs
The updated list of submissions for antiretroviral drugs to the Expert Committee is summarized on this page. The drugs are listed by class. Submissions have been made by the HIV/AIDS Department at WHO with assistance from the Essential Drugs and Medicines Policy Department of the WHO, and the Cochrane Collaboration. Selection of drugs in individual proposals is based on the recommendations in the WHO document "Scaling up antiretroviral therapy in resource-limited settings: Guidelines for a public health approach". The doses and drug combinations are those recommended by the large group of AIDS experts who assisted in drawing up the WHO guidelines document, and those used in the clinical trials summarized in the submissions. Sometimes these recommendations differ in detail from manufacturers' recommendations for the use of these drugs. The submissions should be viewed as evidence summaries, not as treatment recommendations.
Each submission has been written as a "stand alone" document that can be downloaded and used in isolation from the other submissions. For this reason this is quite a large amount of repetition in the documents. The following sections are common to the submissions (or vary only slightly): sections 2, 3, 5, 6 and Section 8 (except part 4). If printing these documents these sections need only be printed once.Final list of drugs included in the current round of submissions:
Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (NRTIs)
Non-nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (NNRTIs)
